Arroyo Valley High School is proud to welcome you as an incoming 9^th grader for the 2012-2013 school year.

The Freshman Experience Program is a 2-week summer school program, where students will receive English, Science, Math and Study Skills instruction. The Freshman Experience Program will run from July 9th through July 20th, 2012, beginning at 7:25 a.m. and concluding at 2:25 p.m. Students will be receiving 5 elective credits for participating in this program. The goal of the Freshman Experience Program is to give students the tools necessary to be successful in the 9th grade.

Parents and students that are selected to participate in the Freshman Experience Program must make a commitment to AVHS to have regular attendance and follow AVHS guidelines. Please keep in mind that TRANSPORTATION is the sole responsibility of the parent. If you have more than 2 absences you will be dropped from the program. If you choose not to sign the contract, AVHS will select a student from the waiting list to take the open spot. Classes are designed with a ratio of 25 students to 1 teacher, therefore enrollment is limited.

Please complete the contract (click to print) so that your child may begin their transition from middle school to high school successfully. You may turn in your paperwork to the front office at Arroyo Valley High School. All paperwork must be returned by May 21, 2012.

What is Puente?

Puente is a program for students, their parents, and their communities. The purpose of the program is to help more students stay in school, attend and succeed in college, and return to the community as mentors and leaders. Puente currently serves students in 49 programs at 45 community colleges and in 33 high schools throughout California.

Puente es un programa para estudiantes, sus padres de familia y comunidades. El
propósito del programa es ayudar a más estudiantes a permanecer en la escuela,
asistir y triunfar en la universidad para después regresar a la comunidad como
mentores y líderes. Actualmente, Puente ofrece sus servicios a estudiantes por
medio de 49 programas en 45 colegios comunitarios y 33 preparatorias, por todo

The Puente High School Project is a college-preparatory program designed to assist and support first-generation, underrepresented college-bound students. Puente aims to increase the number of students that stay in school, attend and succeed in college, and return to the community as mentors and leaders.

• Puente students take 9^th & 10^th grade college-preparatory English classes with a Puente English teacher for the entire school year.
• Puente English curriculum includes Mexican-American/Latino literature.
• Puente students work with a Puente counselor for four years.
• Puente students visit colleges/universities.
• Puente students take college-preparatory courses.
• Puente students participate in mentor activities.
• Puente parents participate in program activities and work closely with the Puente counselor and teacher.

State financial aid for college will soon be available to undocumented residents of California. In groundbreaking and controversial legislation, Gov. Jerry Brown signed AB131, the second half of the California Dream Act, on Friday, October 8, 2011. Under the new law, state funds will begin to be available January 1, 2013.

Ayuda financiera del estado pronto estará disponible para los alumnos indocumentados que viven en California. Gobernador Jerry Brown firmó la ley AB 131, la segunda parte del llamado California “Dream Act” (el Acto del Sueño en California), el viernes 8 de octubre de 2011.
